Elizabethan undergoing major refurbishment in dry dock

At this time of year it is common for our vessels to go into dry dock for some TLC of their own ahead of another busy year on the River Thames. This year, however, Elizabethan is getting much more than a fresh lick of paint.

Our beautiful replica of an 1890s stern-wheeled Mississippi paddle steamer is currently undergoing a major refurbishment which includes a fully revamped upper deck, redesigned wheelhouse and several other extensive additions to improve guests’ comfort and experience on board.

What is changing on Elizabethan?

The upper deck is having four large hardwood panoramic double glazed windows installed. These will match the lower deck windows that were sympathetically installed to retain her beautiful lines as part of a half-million pound refit in 2013. They will allow natural light to flood into the vessel whilst providing sensational views of the scenery as you cruise through London.

These new wide windows will be complemented with the addition of two large sliding hardwood doors, which are being fitted in the middle of the upper deck both port and starboard. This will enhance the flow and accessibility of the vessel.

Elizabethan’s signature retractable roof is also being replaced with a new bespoke hydraulic roof opening system, which will allow for the easy and instant opening of the roof upon request. Ideal for when you want the summer sun to beam in, or dance below the stars at night!

The current banquet seating on the upper deck is also being replaced by sumptuous booths designed to make the space more intimate and luxurious. They will perfectly match the exclusively designed Axminster carpet that is also being fitted.

The comprehensive improvements of the vessel extend elsewhere too. A new air conditioning and heating system is being installed, ensuring a comfortable temperature on board for guests at all times throughout the year. A completely new raised wheelhouse, boasting 360 degree vision and various bespoke safety and security features is also being fitted to enhance the vessel’s features yet further.

This major refurbishment work will also see distinct changes on the outside of the vessel. A change in the exterior colour scheme sees the introduction of a welcoming, stylish burgundy complemented by additional external lighting. All woodwork is receiving at least 10 coats of yacht varnish for a mirror-like finish on the deep red hardwood. Liferafts are also being repositioned into easily accessible positions whilst maintaining the traditional looking features of this beautiful paddle steamer.

When will the refurbishment be complete?

Elizabethan has been in dry dock for a number of weeks already and she will be returning to Butler’s Wharf Pier towards the end of March ready to welcome you on board!
