What to Expect When You Hire a Thames Charter

Booking a private boat for the first time can feel like a leap into the unknown: which vessel, which pier, how does the day actually unfold? At Thames Luxury Charters, we've spent over three decades helping first-time and repeat guests alike plan events on the river, and in that time, we've learnt exactly what people want to know before they commit. If you're weighing up luxury boat hire Thames options for the first time, this guide walks through the whole journey, from your first enquiry to stepping back onto dry land.

Before You Book: Choosing Your Vessel and Package

Every charter begins with a conversation about your event: guest numbers, the occasion, your preferred date, and the kind of atmosphere you're after. Our fleet of three vessels, the Dixie Queen, Elizabethan, and Edwardian, each offers a slightly different feel, from grand paddle-steamer occasions to more intimate private dining, so your events management team will recommend the vessel that best fits your brief.

You can browse our full range of Thames charters to get a feel for the occasions we cater for, whether that's a wedding, a corporate event, a birthday, or a seasonal celebration, before your enquiry even begins.

Confirming Your Event: What Your Coordinator Arranges

Once you've chosen a vessel, a dedicated events coordinator is assigned to your booking and stays with you throughout planning. They'll confirm your date, guest numbers, catering and drinks packages, and any entertainment you'd like on board, from a live band to a DJ. Many guests choose to visit us in person beforehand too: viewings of the vessels, along with tasting sessions for the menus you'll experience on the day, take place at our home pier.

Boarding Day: Where and How You'll Embark

Most charters depart from our Butler's Wharf Pier, moments from Tower Bridge in the historic Shad Thames district, though we can also arrange embarkation from a number of other piers along the river depending on your event. Your coordinator will send clear joining instructions ahead of time, including where to look for your vessel and who to call if any guest gets separated from the group.

If your guests are travelling from further afield or you simply want to be sure everyone finds the right spot, our guide to the best Thames piers is a useful reference for what to expect at each location and how to brief your guests in advance.

We allow fifteen minutes for boarding at each pier, covering embarkation, disembarkation, and any additional pier calls along your route. If your event needs a little longer at any particular stop, this can be arranged in advance.

On Board: Food, Drink and Entertainment

Once you're underway, the experience is entirely built around your event. Our bespoke food, drink and entertainment services cover everything from canapés and barbecue-style menus to full sit-down dining, always paired with a fully stocked bar and a professional, uniformed crew looking after you throughout. Music and entertainment are just as flexible, whether that's a live band for a wedding, a DJ for a birthday, or a quieter backdrop for a corporate dinner.

Your Route Along the Thames

Wherever you board, your route is designed to make the most of London's skyline. Expect to pass landmarks including the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London, Canary Wharf, and the O2, with our captains always happy to accommodate specific requests for particular stretches of the river you'd like your guests to see.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I arrive before boarding?

We recommend guests arrive at least fifteen minutes before the scheduled boarding time to allow for a smooth embarkation, particularly for larger groups.

Can I visit the vessel before my event?

Yes. Viewings and menu tasting sessions take place at Butler's Wharf Pier, our home pier, and your coordinator can arrange this as part of your planning.

What happens if the weather is poor?

Our vessels are equipped for year-round sailing, with covered and heated decks for cooler months, so events go ahead as planned in all but the most extreme conditions.

Is there flexibility on the boarding pier?

While Butler's Wharf Pier is our home and offers the greatest flexibility, we can arrange embarkation from a number of piers along the Thames depending on your event and guest locations, subject to tidal access.

How much planning support will I get?

A dedicated events coordinator supports you from your first enquiry through to the day itself, covering everything from catering choices to final joining instructions for your guests.
