TLC welcomes Oxford and Cambridge back to the Thames for the 2022 Boat Race

After three years away, Sunday 3 April saw the iconic Boat Race once again unfold on the tidal River Thames.

It was a long-awaited return for one of the river’s greatest traditions; owing to coronavirus restrictions, the 2020 race had been cancelled whilst the 2021 edition was held on the River Great Ouse near Ely, Cambridgeshire.

The Boat Race’s homecoming also saw TLC welcoming back representatives and spectators from both universities to the Thames. As has become tradition in its own right, Cambridge supporters decked out the Elizabethan – as they have done since 1994 – with Oxford being cheered on from the Erasmus.

We worked extremely closely with the Erasmus’ operators, City Cruises, to ensure the University of Oxford continued to enjoy the fantastic hospitality they have become accustomed to on past Boat Race days.

Both vessels were moored at Putney Pier, alongside the Championship Course’s startline, giving everyone a unique view of proceedings and the ability to roar on their cohorts! First-class food and drink was served throughout, with the rest of the race shown on screens.

Each vessel had cause to celebrate, with Cambridge Women and Oxford Men both rowing to victory in their respective races.

With both boats and the banks of Thames bustling with an enthusiastic atmosphere, Sunday marked another very welcome return to normality. Everyone enjoyed a truly fantastic day which was three years in the making, and we’re already counting down the days until the 2023 Boat Race!
