Private Boat Charter London: Your Complete 2026 Guide

London is one of the world’s great event cities. But for all its extraordinary hotels, private members’ clubs and rooftop venues, only one setting truly captures the city in its entirety – and that is from the water. A private boat charter in London gives you exclusive use of a luxury vessel on the River Thames, carrying your guests through the very heart of the capital while London unfolds around you in every direction.

Thames Luxury Charters (TLC) has owned and operated its fleet of private charter vessels since 1993. We are not a booking agent or a broker. When you charter with TLC, you deal directly with the people who own these boats and know this river inside out. This guide tells you everything you need to know about planning a private charter on the Thames — from choosing your vessel and departure pier to understanding what’s included and how to secure your date.

What Is a Private Boat Charter in London?

A private boat charter means you exclusively reserve one of our vessels for your event. Your guests, your timings, your menu, your music — the entire experience is designed around you. This is fundamentally different from a public river cruise, where you share the boat with strangers on a fixed route at a fixed time.

With a private charter, the vessel belongs to your party from the moment you step aboard to the moment you disembark. Our uniformed crew are there solely for you. Our events management team has coordinated your requirements in the weeks beforehand. And the river, with its ever-changing parade of London’s most iconic landmarks, provides a backdrop that is simply not available at any venue on dry land.

For an overview of everything a TLC private charter can offer, visit our private luxury charters page. If you already have a specific vision in mind, our Create Your Own Event page shows how fully bespoke your charter can be.

And if you’re planning a more intimate gathering, our small party boat hire Thames options offer the same quality of private charter experience – with all the same personal service and attention to detail – scaled to suit smaller groups.

What Occasions Suit a Private London Charter?

The versatility of a private charter is one of its most compelling qualities. Our vessels have hosted virtually every kind of event imaginable. Here are the eight occasions for which a London river charter is most frequently chosen:

Corporate Events — Product launches, client entertaining, team away days, networking receptions and company milestones. A private charter on the Thames consistently outperforms a hotel ballroom for lasting impressions. Explore our corporate charter options.

Weddings — Whether you’re hosting your reception on the water or departing after a land-based ceremony, few settings are as romantic or as memorable. See our dedicated wedding reception charter page.

Birthday Parties — A landmark birthday deserves a landmark venue. Our birthday party boat charters cater for everything from intimate dinners to full-scale celebrations for hundreds.

Hen Parties — Glamorous, private, and completely your own. A river charter elevates the hen party from a night out to a night they’ll remember. Browse our London party boat options.

Christmas Parties — London in December is magnificent from the water. Our fleet is dressed for the season, and our Christmas party charters offer both private and shared-event options.

Dinner Cruises — Fine dining in motion, with the London skyline as your view. Our award-winning catering partner FoodbyDish crafts bespoke menus for every occasion, from canapé receptions to formal five-course dinners.

New Year’s Eve — There is no finer vantage point for the fireworks. Our New Year’s Eve Dinner & Fireworks experience aboard the Dixie Queen and Elizabethan sells out well in advance every year.

Film & Production — Our vessels are regularly used as locations for commercial shoots, music videos and broadcast productions. The on-water backdrops are unavailable anywhere else in London.

Dixie Queen — London’s Iconic Paddle Steamer

The Dixie Queen is the most immediately recognisable vessel on the Thames. A large replica 19th-century paddle steamer, she carries up to 620 guests across multiple event spaces, two full bars and a complete catering operation. She departs from Tower Pier — and as she does, Tower Bridge is raised to let her through, a moment that never fails to astonish guests experiencing it for the first time.

P.S. Elizabethan — Elegant and Versatile

Fully refurbished in a £500,000 overhaul in 2020, the P.S. Elizabethan is the most popular and versatile vessel in the TLC fleet. Her retractable roof deck transforms the upper level into an open-air space on fine evenings. Her lower salon — with deep carpets, polished wood panelling and ambient lighting — provides an atmosphere of understated elegance for dinner and dancing. She accommodates up to 200 guests.

Edwardian — Intimate and Characterful

Built by Sir Richard Branson and beautifully refurbished, the Edwardian hosts between 8 and 90 guests in intimate, meticulously appointed surroundings. Her open upper deck is a delight on warm evenings, and her compact scale ensures every guest feels genuinely part of the occasion. She is the natural choice for private dinners, small corporate events and intimate celebrations.

We always recommend visiting the vessels in person before committing. Your dedicated event coordinator will arrange a viewing at your convenience — and in our experience, guests who come aboard make their decision within minutes.

Departure Piers for London Private Charters

TLC vessels depart from a selection of central London piers. For maps, directions and full details on each, visit our pier information hub. The most popular departure points for private charters are:

Butler’s Wharf Pier — The home of the TLC fleet, on the south bank immediately beside Tower Bridge. This is the most flexible pier for scheduling all three vessels and provides one of London’s most photographed backdrops for arrival and departure.

Tower Pier — Adjacent to the Tower of London on the north bank. The Dixie Queen departs from here — and when she does, Tower Bridge is raised in her honour, a spectacle that draws gasps from guests every time.

Westminster Pier — Ideally positioned for guests travelling from the West End, Waterloo or Westminster. Views of the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye directly from the boarding point.

Canary Wharf Pier — The preferred choice for corporate charters, drawing guests from London’s financial district, with excellent Jubilee line connections.

Greenwich Pier — For charters heading east, Greenwich provides a scenic and historic departure point on the south bank.

Pier availability is determined by your vessel, the tidal schedule and event logistics. Your event coordinator will advise on the best option for your guest profile and will provide comprehensive directions to all attendees in advance.

How Much Does a Private Charter in London Cost?

Private charter pricing reflects the exclusive, bespoke nature of each event. Several factors determine the final cost:

Vessel selected (Edwardian, Elizabethan or Dixie Queen)

      Number of guests

Date and day of the week

Duration of the charter (most private events run between 3 and 5 hours)

Catering, drinks packages and additional services selected

As a general guide, private charters start from approximately £2,000 for an intimate event on the Edwardian and scale with vessel size, guest numbers and services. TLC’s bespoke offering is widely regarded as exceptional value given the exclusivity of the setting, the quality of the vessels and the personal service provided.

The most accurate way to understand the cost for your specific event is to speak with our events team directly. We prepare detailed, tailored proposals within 24 hours of your initial enquiry, at no obligation. Get in touch here or call us on +44 (0)20 7357 7751.

How to Book a Private Charter with TLC

Our booking procedure has been designed to make the process as smooth and enjoyable as the event itself. Here are the four stages:

1.    Enquire. Contact our events team via the enquiry form or call us directly. We’ll ask for your preferred date, guest numbers and a brief outline of what you have in mind.

2.    Receive your proposal. Within 24 hours, we will send a detailed bespoke proposal: a vessel recommendation, an outline itinerary, and a full pricing breakdown.

3.    Visit the vessel & taste the menu. We recommend an in-person vessel viewing so you can experience the space and visualise your event on board. Menu tastings with FoodbyDish are also available at this stage.

4.    Confirm & relax. A completed booking form and deposit secure your date. From here, your dedicated coordinator manages every detail through to the event itself.

Booking timelines to note: summer Saturdays (May–September) and Christmas season dates (November–December) are our most popular and are often reserved 6–9 months in advance. New Year’s Eve sells out earliest of all. Spring, autumn and weekday dates typically have more availability. The single most reliable piece of advice we can offer is to enquire early.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a comprehensive list of questions and answers, see our full FAQ page. Below are the questions we are asked most often by guests planning a private charter for the first time.

Is it safe to charter a private vessel on the River Thames?

Absolutely. All TLC vessels are fully licensed, regularly inspected by the Port of London Authority, and crewed by experienced, DBS-checked professionals. Safety briefings are delivered at embarkation on every sailing.

What happens if the weather is poor on the day?

Private charters operate in the vast majority of weather conditions. Our fully enclosed, heated and air-conditioned saloon decks mean your event continues beautifully regardless of rain. In rare cases of severe weather, our Events Team will advise you well in advance.

Are TLC vessels accessible for guests with disabilities?

Several of our vessels offer step-free boarding options. Please mention this at the time of enquiry so our events team can recommend the most suitable vessel and pier arrangement for your guests.

Is there parking near the departure piers?

Street parking and nearby car parks are available at most piers. We recommend public transport where possible — our home pier at Butler's Wharf is well-served by London Bridge Station. Full directions are provided to all guests upon booking.

Can children come aboard for a private charter?

Yes. Children are very welcome on private charter events. Please mention this at the enquiry stage so our team can confirm the most appropriate arrangements and any relevant requirements.

How far in advance should I book a private London charter?

We recommend enquiring at least 8–12 weeks ahead. Peak dates — summer Saturdays, the Christmas season and New Year's Eve — are often reserved months in advance. Early enquiry is always worthwhile to secure your preferred date.
